With over 9 billion tons of plastic produced since 1950, scientists from the University of California Santa Barbara and the University of Georgia say that close to 7 billion tons are no longer in use.
That is an astonishing number – of that 7 billion tons of plastic, they estimate just over 12 percent was incinerated and only 9 percent was recycled. That means, this 2017 study indicates over 5.5 billion tons of plastic has been left to litter our oceans and land [1].
