A Case Study in Moving - Curb•It

Married for 50 years, Dave and Naomi were ready for a change of pace and scenery. They’d finally made it to retirement and were ready to take advantage of the extra time. Montana was the destination and they found the home of their dreams. I sat down with them and visited about their moving experience.

“What we didn’t anticipate was all the stuff we accumulated over 50 years,” Dave said. “You get to know a house and find all the nooks and crannies to store stuff in. We found things while we were packing we thought we’d lost!”

While there’s nothing like an extra Christmas with treasures you know you’ll love, Dave and Naomi’s new home wasn’t the same size. Like many retirees, they decided to downsize. No kids at home, can focus on specific hobbies, and are turning a new page in their lives. Unfortunately, their current things didn’t fit their current dream.

Dave and Naomi agreed, “We realized if we wanted a fresh start, things were going to have to go.”

That started the arduous process of sifting through years of memories, trinkets, and collections.

“It was painful,” Naomi shares. “I know letting go of things from the past makes room for new things in the future, but it’s all so precious.”

She sighs and I can tell she had made some difficult decisions with this move.

“What do you let go of? Stuff from your kids, hobbies you have, or things you hoped to learn?” She looks at me but I don’t have the answer.

“If our kids hadn’t taken stuff to the dump or Goodwill for us,” she continues. “I don’t think we could’ve managed. I wanted to keep everything and there was no way I could’ve loaded it in the truck myself to throw away or donate. It was hard enough just making the decision.”

Dave echoes her sentiments.

“We’re older and our kids were a huge help. You know, we’re still pretty active, but we simply can’t do as much as we did. If they weren’t around I’m not sure how we would’ve managed getting rid of what we did, let alone the move, though I’m sure they went through their fair share of Aleve!” he chuckles and adds, “If we had known about a curbside service that would’ve taken our junk and donations – that would’ve made a world of difference and alleviated a ton of stress. Not just for us, but for our kids as well.”

When I asked about utilizing the Curb-It app in the future as they continued to process their things in their new home, mentioning they wouldn’t even have to make a phone call, they looked at each other and laughed a little.

“That sounds great,” Naomi says. They both looked relieved.
