It can be hard to get motivated for spring cleaning. Or, any cleaning. But, with the official day of spring only 15 days away…we could all use a little motivation to kick the winter blues and help those daffodils shine.
Compiled here are our top five tips that hopefully get you moving to create a welcome-to-spring environment.
- Watch the sunrise
The entire sunrise. Not just glance over and think, ‘Oh, that’s pretty.’ Grab your tea or coffee and make yourself comfortable. Winter already deprives most of us of our much-needed vitamin D. Taking just a few moments in the morning to allow the sun to fall over your face and warm your body is an excellent reminder that sunny days are almost here. That warm feeling of gentle rays will soon be visited upon you daily. Enjoy the moment and savor it. It will get your day off to a great start.
- Buy some flowers
It can be hard to keep plants alive. So, why not invest in a few that are meant to have a short lifespan but bring you complete joy in the meantime! Walking by a table with a vase full of tulips, daffodils, or brightly colored wildflowers is enough to make anyone smile. It’s encouraging, too, because soon they’ll be popping up everywhere – not just in the grocery store.
- Light some candles
Candles are great for ambiance, sure, but if you didn’t know already, smell is our most powerful sense. The human olfactory bulb is part of the limbic system which is believed to play a major role in controlling mood, memory, behavior, and emotion. When you light a candle smelling of strawberry, fresh linen, berries, or whatever smell you associate with spring your brain screams ‘Yes!’ because it is associating the good times (warm, relaxed, sunny) with those smells. It may still be overcast but lighting that candle can do wonders for your psyche.
- Take it one room at a time
Spring cleaning isn’t a marathon. Just like the young buds all around, it takes time. So, allow yourself the time to make it happen. Select a room to get started in and simply start there. Once the room is done, awesome! Relax for the rest of the day or have an ice cream – something to acknowledge you did well. Then, when you’re ready, tackle the next room.
- Break it down into bite-sized chunks
Looking at one room and seeing it as a whole to be completed at once can be overwhelming. Resolve this by breaking down each project within the room into smaller ones. If you need to, dived the room into quadrants. From there, identify smaller tasks in each quadrant that need to be completed. Make a list. As you (and your family) complete the items on the list, cross them off. In no time, the room will be done! See the above tip for what to do next (just scan for the words ‘ice cream’).
Again, we hope you’ve found some useful ideas you can implement this week. And as you move forward and make progress, don’t let donation or dump trips slow you down. Use the Curb-It app (iPhone, Android) or give us a call (888) 220-8743) and we’ll take care of those runs for you.
